The GoldenSeed Kinship Care Collective (GSKCC) is dedicated to providing a community service that reweaves intergenerational care to our communities. The Collective fosters our children’s cultural, social, cognitive and creative growth and contributes to our elder generations thriving and aging gracefully in community.
About Us
are a kinship group dedicated to a culture of care. We are humble, experienced parents, educators, activists, growers, and community members who firmly believe that it takes a village/tribe to raise children. We are honored to provide services and care in that light and are committed to:
- providing culturally and age appropriate, holistic childcare services to the Atlanta Black Community in the ways that complement families home parenting and are most beneficial to the whole Black child. GSCC has been providing care since 2013.
Our Origin Story
The GoldenSeed Childcare Collective was imagined in 2013 as a kinship group of dedicated, humble, experienced parents, educators, activists, growers, and community members committed to providing culturally appropriate, holistic childcare services to the Black Community in the ways that complement families home parenting and are most beneficial to the whole Black child. We firmly believe that it takes a village/tribe to raise children and we are honored to provide services and care in that light.
The GoldenSeed Childcare Collective was imagined in 2013 as “The collective childcare placement services Families will call us up, explain their childcare needs, and we’ll set them up with a nanny or babysitter from within our collective. Each collective member can set their own rates and hours, but each family will pay a living wage. We would need to set up a method in which the “collective” gets a percentage off top…
Our providers, Alsie, Mama Zola, Mshairi all worked for an African-centered preschool that closed abruptly in 2012. Many of those parents, even prior to the school closing, tapped the educators for supplementary childcare afterschool, pick up and drop offs, and weekend care regularly. After the school closed, and with so many parents requesting support and connectivity to care providers zahra, Alsie and Andrea began foundational conversations to begin to develop out how our own families and children care needs could be held, and the care needs of our broader community could be held. A facebook group page was created to support coordination — this page still exists today.
Nexus of care needs and kinship at OrangeMoon — financial need encourages the development of the collective to make care more affordable and accessible.
To name a few folks that have offered their tender love and care to children in our community — Childcare providers like Alsie, Mama Zola, Mama Dee, Andrea, Tricia, Bianca, Ari, Tia
zahra and Alsie and more recently, Mshairi, have held infrastructure development, coordination, document creation and facilitation, since its founding.
Our Framework (Our Why)
We acknowledge that the devaluation of care work as essential work is informed by racialized patriarchy, the exploitation of domestic labor and the invisibilization of the care economy. The care that we provide is an act of love, and are necessary offerings to ensure cultural continuity. The more diverse and expansive the family unit the more the labor of care work can be equitably held, lifting burden. We have chosen to center our work in the communities that we live in and the sphere of social justice movements so that the brilliance of our children and the wisdom of our elders remains in conversation and continuity with our movement work.
Our work is to preserve, reweave and reprioritize the cultural practices and traditions and the quality and intentionality of care that is essential throughout our lifetime, with intentional sweetness and rigor in our care that help our communities thrive.
How we do our work
The GSKCC is dedicated to honoring the needs of families and childcare providers while working together to help our children learn, grow, and thrive. We prioritize Black and Brown families and childcare providers because we believe in supporting and nurturing the needs of communities first. The GSKCC will serve the community by providing care for pop-up events, conferences, summer programs, weekend childcare offerings and other events that are in need of childcare services.
The GSKCC is dedicated to ensuring our elders continue to thrive in their later years. To contribute to their thriving, we offer companionship/company via scheduled in person check-ins and quality time, invitations to community events, errand running (groceries, pharmacy, appointments, etc) , household tending (light cleaning/small task, repair work, organizing the household) , and . We also provide our beloved elders with an opportunity to earn additional income if they so desire by hiring them as childcare providers for the Collective.

The GoldenSeed KinshipCare Collective works with an intergenerational network of experienced parents, educators, activists, growers, and community members who firmly believe that it takes a village/tribe to raise our children and care for our aging elders. The network centers the South, but has an expansive national reach.
